How Does God Answer Prayer?

We all need an answer to prayer, but how does God answer prayer?

I love the scene in the movie Bruce Almighty where the character Bruce, who has been assigned the role and duties of God, tries to figure out how to answer prayers. First, he tries the filing cabinet idea and his small apartment is filled in an instant with tall, clunky metal objects. He nixes this idea for post-it notes, but as every available space in his home (including himself, the dog, and his sleeping girlfriend) is covered in little yellow squares of paper, he decides that won’t work either. His final answer: a computer application that downloads prayer requests.

After waiting hours for the prayer requests to download, he begins the daunting challenge of answering each request.  Soon, this becomes too tedious for him and he submits the answer “YES” to all requests and considers it a job well done.

Ha! God’s job is not that easy! Even though this movie is not a completely clean Christian movie, I love the little twists and turns we journey through as the complexity of our God’s work is demonstrated in a humorous, yet understandable way.

Bruce took the easy way out by answering “yes” to thousands of people who prayed to win the lottery.  Many times, the easy way isn’t the right way.  In this case, each person received a whopping $17. The “winners” rioted and created a rampage throughout the city.

When we pray, do we want our answers from a God who takes the easy way or who does things the right way? When God answers our prayers, He has to take all things into consideration—things that we may not even realize are issues.

I remember when I was going through a difficult time in my life; a wonderful friend told me that it wasn’t just about me.  God loves all His children and He has to deal with each one of us—even when answering “yes” to one child’s prayer means answering “no” to another child’s prayer—even if it takes longer for him to answer our prayers because He’s waiting on us or because He’s working through another child’s situation that relates to our prayer.

God works out the circumstances to benefit all His children.

God sees all and knows all.  He does things the right way.  The easy way—if it’s only a temporary fix, makes no sense to our Father.  God doesn’t give us band-aid fixes.  He gives us sure, solid, airtight fixes.  He gives us the fixes that last.  Are we able to wait for Him to do what needs to be done in order for us to get us our answers?  Can we trust and believe that He has the situation under control?  Are we doing our part?

He is a God who answers prayer. However, as some country song mentioned, we may not like the answers.

Our God is not a God to be easily explained, but He is a God we can trust.  Nothing on this earth nor in the heavens is a mystery to Him.  He has all wisdom, knowledge, and ability.  He is a God who is there to help us if we trust Him enough to let Him.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Pro 3:5-6 NKJV).
